Pastel façades reflected in ponds, with a castle at the end of the square.
Telč is famous for its picture-perfect square, but the best visit goes beyond the photograph. Walk beneath the arcades, notice the differences between neighbouring houses and continue beside the ponds. Stay for the changing light and the place becomes far more than a day-trip backdrop.
Telč’s appearance was shaped by the prosperity and Renaissance rebuilding associated with Zachariáš of Hradec. The long market square and château belong to the same story, while ponds and old water defences help explain the town’s setting. Walking outside the centre changes the view from individual façades to the outline of the whole settlement; Roštejn is a separate countryside excursion.

Zachariáš of Hradec Square
The square’s arcaded houses preserve the rhythm of an old market place while presenting a varied collection of colourful gables. Renaissance rebuilding under Zachariáš of Hradec transformed earlier Gothic houses, and later owners added further decoration. Walk beneath the arcades, then step back to compare neighbouring façades. The shared frontage gives the square its coherence, but the differences in proportion, colour and ornament supply much of its character.
Plan your visit Ask the visitor centre for a walking map and background on the individual houses.
The château’s Renaissance transformation belongs to the same sixteenth-century period that reshaped the town square. Zachariáš of Hradec expanded and rebuilt the older castle with the help of Italian craftsmen, creating an aristocratic residence at the end of the market place. Its rooms, courtyards and relationship with the surrounding water offer a different view of Telč from the façades alone. Interior circuits reveal the residence’s individual spaces and later history.

The ponds are part of Telč’s physical history as well as its photogenic setting. Water helped define the defended town, and walks beyond the central square reveal the relationship between château, churches, roofs and shoreline. Reflections change the composition again, especially when the water is still. This outward-looking route complements close inspection of the houses: the town becomes a whole landscape rather than a row of decorated façades.
Plan your visit Ask for a suitable current route, paths and surfaces vary with weather.
Roštejn stands in woodland outside Telč, with a distinctive tall tower and a very different atmosphere from the open town square. The castle’s visiting routes combine historical and nature-related interpretation, reflecting its countryside setting. The approach through the trees and the vertical outline of the tower are part of the appeal. Keep it as a separate outing, with time for the surrounding landscape as well as the buildings themselves.
Plan your visit Arrange transport and check the current castle season and available tours.
Choose the visits that matter most to you, then check their official ticket pages for available dates, tour languages and entry arrangements. Keep confirmed visiting times in mind when planning your transport and hotel stay.
Telč is a smaller-town stop, compare the complete rail or bus journey and your return time. An overnight stay gives more flexibility than a tight connection between larger cities.
Check Telč Castle’s seasonal tours first. If adding Roštejn Castle, plan transport and its own opening calendar separately, rather than assuming both fit easily into a short visit.
Leave room for the square and a pond-side stroll between indoor visits. Ask locally about path conditions and step-free alternatives if using a buggy or wheelchair.
Walk the main square slowly and notice the house fronts beneath and above the arcades.
Visit the château on an available tour and leave time for the gardens.
Follow a pond-side walk and return for the evening light.
A suggested outline, adjust it to opening days, bookings and your pace.
Enjoy the place, not just the sights
Pause. Taste. Stay a little.
Make the arcades your invitation to linger over coffee or lunch. Leave time for an evening walk when the square feels different from its daytime bustle.
