A Renaissance château, musical roots and walls unlike any you have seen.
Litomyšl brings together elegant architecture and an unexpected imagination. Visit the château, then seek out Portmoneum, a small house whose painted interiors lead into another world. Gardens and a long historic square give the day a gentler rhythm between discoveries.
Litomyšl’s cultural identity is unusually varied for a small town. The château’s Renaissance exterior contains later layers of aristocratic taste, while Portmoneum turns a domestic interior into a densely painted personal world. Smetana’s birthplace adds a musical strand. Between them, the long town square and gardens offer breathing space and a closer look at the town beyond its headline monument.

01
Litomyšl Château
Built for Vratislav of Pernštejn between 1568 and 1581, the château adapts Italian Renaissance ideas to a Bohemian setting. Its decorated exterior and arcaded courtyard reward close inspection before an interior tour reveals later aristocratic tastes. Eighteenth-century alterations added stucco and painted decoration, and the historic theatre retains classical stage scenery. The nearby formal garden and landscape park extend the residence into a larger designed setting.

Portmoneum, Josef Váchal Museum
Josef Váchal’s mural-covered rooms and carved, painted furniture transform the house associated with collector Josef Portman. The museum explains their relationship, the later role of publisher Ladislav Horáček and the demanding restoration of the interiors. This is an encounter with a complete artistic environment rather than paintings hung in a neutral gallery. The unassuming exterior, shown here, makes the intensity of the rooms within particularly unexpected.

Smetana’s birthplace & musical heritage
The composer’s birthplace connects Litomyšl’s musical reputation with the castle brewery setting in which his family lived. It offers a more personal point of entry than a concert hall: a place associated with the beginnings of a life that became central to Czech music. Pair the museum presentation with the town’s wider musical heritage, while treating performances and festival programmes as a separate, changing part of the experience.

Monastery gardens & the long square
The long historic square reveals the town at the scale of shops, house fronts, arcades and small architectural details. Walk its length to appreciate the changing façades rather than viewing it only from the château end. The monastery gardens offer a quieter contrast, with planting, sculpture and open space between major buildings. Together these places make the connections between the indoor sights an enjoyable part of the day.
Plan your visit Ask locally for a current walking map and information on any event-related restrictions.
Choose the visits that matter most to you, then check their official ticket pages for available dates, tour languages and entry arrangements. Keep confirmed visiting times in mind when planning your transport and hotel stay.
Check the complete regional connection, not just the nearest main-line station. Ask your hotel about parking or luggage drop-off if staying around the historic square.
The château and Portmoneum have their own tickets and opening calendars. Check both before fixing the order of your day, especially outside the main season.
The attraction is an intimate painted interior, plan a shorter, attentive visit. Ask the operator about group arrangements and access requirements before arrival.
Allow time beyond the château for the town’s Smetana connections, a café and the square. Ask the local visitor service about events on your actual travel dates.
Begin with a reserved château tour and a walk through its surroundings.
Pause for lunch, then visit Portmoneum on its current opening schedule.
Return through the monastery gardens and settle into the square for the evening.
A suggested outline, adjust it to opening days, bookings and your pace.
Enjoy the place, not just the sights
Pause. Taste. Stay a little.
Enjoy the cafés around Smetanovo náměstí and plan an evening stroll rather than leaving straight after the château tour. Ask about concerts and local events during your dates.
