Mount Tamalpais
Marin County’s mountain views and woodland walks
Mount Tamalpais rises in Marin County north of San Francisco. Its state park brings together wooded slopes, open ridges and views toward the coast and bay. Choose a specific trail or viewpoint: “Mount Tam” describes a large landscape with several access points, not a single roadside attraction.

Match the walk to the day
A viewpoint outing and a long ridge-to-coast hike need very different amounts of time. Consult the state park map for trail length, elevation change and the correct starting point. Views depend on visibility; fog can conceal the coast while also giving woodland walks their atmosphere.
Keep neighboring parks distinct
Muir Woods National Monument is a separate redwood destination with its own entrance and parking arrangements. Stinson Beach and the Marin Headlands are other possible outings, but linking them all can mean considerable time on winding roads. Choose one main experience and add a nearby stop only if time allows.
MAKE IT YOUR JOURNEY
Plan your visit
Bring layers and check weather, fire restrictions and trail notices. Reserve any required Muir Woods parking or shuttle separately if adding that visit. Do not assume mobile reception, a summit parking space or clear views. An early start leaves more room for a relaxed walk and the return journey.
