Golden Gate Bridge

A San Francisco landmark best understood on foot

The Golden Gate Bridge crosses the entrance to San Francisco Bay between San Francisco and Marin County. A visit can be a short viewpoint stop, a walk on the bridge or part of a longer waterfront outing. Decide which experience you want before choosing where to arrive.

Begin at the San Francisco end

The Welcome Center area and outdoor exhibits introduce the bridge’s engineering and history. Nearby viewpoints show how the crossing relates to the Pacific, the bay and the surrounding headlands. A photograph from shore can be just as rewarding as crossing the span.

Plan the crossing and return

Pedestrian and bicycle access follow different sidewalk rules and operating arrangements. Consult the bridge district’s current access information before walking or cycling. If continuing toward Sausalito, plan the entire onward route and return transport instead of assuming the town is immediately at the bridge’s northern end.

MAKE IT YOUR JOURNEY

Plan your visit

Allow time for wind, fog and changing visibility; bring an extra layer even when the city feels warm. Parking near the bridge is limited, so consider public transport. Use designated sidewalks and viewpoints, and check current access notices. A walking visit and a driving crossing are different experiences with different arrangements.
