Six discoveries beyond the main route

Different perspectives on Thailand, not a promise of empty streets. Popular Thai holiday periods can be busy in these places too.

Hotels & places to stay

A base that suits your journey.

Twenty-four selected hotels across twelve destinations, each with a published address, phone number and official website. Choose a destination to compare its two suggestions and their locations.

For individuals, families and small groups needing fewer than 15 rooms, contact the hotel directly. These are selected accommodation contacts, not a nationwide hotel database or personal inspections.

Large groups, 15 rooms or more

Ask ATA for low group hotel rates.

We use existing hotel agreements where available and negotiate for your group when needed, backed by over 35 years of group travel experience.

We respond within 48 hours, allowing for time zones worldwide. “Instant” rates do not always give you the lowest rates.

Choose fewer bases, enjoy them more

Build a journey with breathing room.

These are independent route ideas. Thailand is a large country, allow proper travel days and confirm each rail, flight or road connection before booking.

Cities & former capitals

Begin in Bangkok, give Ayutthaya its own day or overnight stay, then consider Sukhothai as a separate leg with a longer transfer.

A northern chapter

Choose Chiang Mai with Lampang, or Phrae with Nan. Chiang Rai adds a separate chapter of temple art. Pick a manageable pair of bases and allow transfer time; these places are not one quick day-trip circuit.

A Mekong pause

Give Chiang Khan a couple of nights after arranging your journey through Loei or a longer road connection. It is a distinct northeastern chapter.

Two coasts, two choices

Phuket is on the Andaman side, Khanom on the mainland Gulf coast. Choose the setting and season that suit you, or allow a substantial transfer to combine them.

A palace-and-coast chapter

Phetchaburi offers a hilltop palace, cave shrine and old-town visit south of Bangkok. Choose a town or coastal base and arrange the onward journey separately.

Make the visit work for you

A little preparation goes a long way.

Thailand uses the baht, THB. Pack for heat, dress respectfully at religious sites and check local conditions before boat trips or outdoor excursions. Northern air quality and the two coasts’ different rainfall patterns deserve attention.

Check visa requirements for your nationality and the official Thailand Digital Arrival Card guidance. The arrival card is separate from a visa, use the official Immigration Bureau service.

Plan the trip around the places.

Where should I start on a first visit?

Start with the kind of visit you want: Bangkok for the capital and river, a northern base for temple and town visits, or a coastal base for a slower stay. These 12 guides are choices, not a checklist. Pick a few places and leave travel days between regions.

Which coast should I choose?

Phuket is on the Andaman side; Khanom is on the mainland Gulf coast. Their rainfall patterns differ. Compare the setting, current forecast and transport before booking, and allow a substantial transfer if you want both.

How do I choose a hotel?

Open the destination you are interested in and read its Where to stay section. The two suggestions explain the location: old town, riverside, countryside or coast. Check the journey to your chosen sights and contact the hotel about dates and room requirements.
