Unique attractions not to be missed

Find your way around

Choose a numbered place or its name to open the guide. Islands need their own ferry or flight plan.

Orientation map, not a road or ferry map. Approximate locations, simplified coastlines. Boundary: Natural Earth, public domain.

Good neighbours for your itinerary

A mainland journey

Athens, Meteora and Thessaloniki make separate chapters of a longer mainland visit. Allow travel days and check current rail or coach services.

Stone towns & mountain air

Dimitsana and Monemvasia belong to a Peloponnese road journey. Nafpaktos, Zagori and Kastoria are farther north, choose a regional route rather than squeezing them into one loop.

Choose an island rhythm

Syros and Santorini are Cycladic options, with routes and frequency varying by season. Chania on Crete and Rhodes are separate island chapters. Verify connections before booking hotels.

Travel tips & local know-how

The essentials from our original Greece introduction, refreshed for a practical journey.

Money & everyday spending

Greece uses the euro. Carry some cash for small stops, check card acceptance and read the bill before adding a discretionary tip. Compare exchange costs rather than automatically accepting a conversion at a terminal.

Official tourism information

Ferries are part of the plan

Check the actual departure port, seasonal timetable and baggage arrangements. Wind and disruption can affect sailing. Leave a buffer before an international flight rather than relying on a last-minute island connection.

Transport and disruption advice

A greeting goes a long way

Try kalimera for good morning and efcharisto for thank you. Respect worshippers, dress appropriately at religious sites and ask before photographing people.

What are Greek people like?

Choose the season for the journey

Summer brings heat and busy islands. Spring and autumn can suit city walks, but swimming, ferries and mountain conditions vary. Reserve popular sites and small properties ahead.

Safety, weather & access

The U.S. advisory checked for this guide lists Greece at Level 1, exercise normal precautions. Watch belongings in crowded areas, follow wildfire and heat notices, and respect beach and trail restrictions. Steps and uneven surfaces are common at historic sites, ask about the exact accessible entrance.

Small mistakes worth avoiding

Do not confuse the Athens airport with the ferry port, assume every island has a direct connection to the next, or plan midday summer walks without shade and water. Check monastery closing days and distinguish the ancient theatre near Lygourio from the smaller coastal theatre at Epidaurus.
