Come for the music. Stay for the city beyond the stage.
Austin gives a Texas journey a different rhythm. Start beneath the pink-granite Capitol dome, trade downtown streets for a lakeside trail, then follow the sound of a band into the evening. Between the landmarks, South Congress shops, neighbourhood cafés and spring-fed swimming make room for a slower, more personal visit.

Texas State Capitol
The domed rotunda, legislative chambers and surrounding grounds put the scale and ambition of Texas into perspective. A guided introduction is a useful way to connect the architecture with the people and decisions behind it. Leave time outside for the monuments and a walk towards the Capitol Mall.
Plan your visitGuided Capitol tours are free. Check the State Preservation Board for departures, security arrangements and accessibility. Groups and visitors requesting a foreign-language tour should contact the visitor service ahead of time.
A walk beside the water brings the skyline down to human scale. The Butler Trail links downtown views, shady stretches and bridges, with places to pause rather than a single attraction entrance. Choose a short out-and-back section or a bridge-to-bridge loop that suits your energy.
Plan your visitThe full trail is about ten miles; you do not need to complete it. Use the Conservancy’s maps to find accessible entrances, restrooms and current detours. Take drinking water and put longer walks early in the day during hot weather.
Within Zilker Park, this spring-fed outdoor pool offers one of Austin’s most distinctive experiences: a proper swim in a natural setting close to the city. It is a refreshing counterpoint to museums and pavement, or simply a reason to give the park more time.
Plan your visitCheck the city’s current swimming schedule, admission and maintenance closures before setting out. Natural surfaces and water conditions differ from a conventional pool. Arrange suitable supervision for children and use the published accessibility information when planning assistance.

South Congress & an evening of live music
Browse independent shops, stop for coffee and look back towards the Capitol along South Congress Avenue. Then choose a performance for its music rather than assuming the busiest nightlife street is the right fit. A small listening room and a late-night club offer very different evenings.
Plan your visitCheck the official visitor calendar and the venue’s own ticket page for start time, age restrictions, seating and door policy. Reserve a performance you particularly want to hear; arrange the journey back before a late show.
Reserve the concert or performance that matters most, then build sightseeing around it. Major music festivals and race weekends can put pressure on hotel availability. Check the city event calendar before selecting dates.
Keep outdoor visits comfortable
Combine an early lakeside walk with an indoor visit later. In warmer months, a long midday walk between the Capitol and Zilker Park is an uncomfortable way to save a short bus or car journey.
A family or accessible visit
Balance the Capitol with a short trail section or park stop. Ask each venue about step-free entry, accessible toilets and companion seating. For Barton Springs, read the city’s facility information before promising a swim to everyone.
Pick your neighbourhood
Downtown suits the Capitol and evening performances; South Congress puts shops and cafés outside the door. Compare the actual walking route to your plans, hotel parking charges and expected evening noise before booking.
An unhurried introduction
A day to make your own.
Begin with the Capitol and a stroll on the surrounding grounds.
Have lunch, then take a manageable section of the Butler Trail; choose Barton Springs instead if swimming is the priority.
Browse South Congress before an early dinner and a preselected live performance.

Enjoy the place, not just the sights
Give yourself time.
Austin rewards an overnight stay because the evening is part of the experience. Give music its own space rather than squeezing it after an exhausting sightseeing day. With another day, add a museum north of the Capitol or spend longer in Zilker Park.
Before you book
Compare the total room cost, including taxes, parking and any mandatory fees. Ask for the specific access features you need, and read cancellation terms for your dates.
A useful local contact
Eat & drink.
A place to pause between discoveries. Check current menus and contact the restaurant directly for reservations and dietary needs.
Scholz Garten
A historic German-Texan beer garden near the Capitol and university area. A practical lunch or early-evening stop for sausages and other hearty dishes; check the current menu and event calendar, particularly on busy game days. Contact the team for group seating and dietary requests.
A historic downtown hotel at Brazos and Sixth Street, useful for a central stay and evening dining. Ask about room location if a quiet night is important.
A smaller, distinctive South Congress base with an outdoor pool. Choose it for the neighbourhood rather than immediate proximity to the Capitol; ask about room layout and access needs.

Arrive with a plan.
Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) serves the city. Check CapMetro’s current airport connection and journey planner before choosing a bus, taxi or rideshare. Central sights can be combined on foot, but the Capitol, South Congress and Zilker Park are separate areas: plan the transfers as well as the attractions.
