San Diego

Museums, waterfront neighborhoods and Pacific headlands

San Diego is a Southern California coastal city near the Mexican border. Its attractions spread across several neighborhoods and peninsulas, so a good visit groups nearby places together: Balboa Park, the waterfront and Point Loma each deserve their own time.

Give Balboa Park a focused visit

Balboa Park brings gardens, cultural institutions and museums into one large setting. Pick one or two museums that interest you and allow time to walk between them. The San Diego Zoo is a substantial outing of its own; combining it with every museum in the park makes for a rushed day.

Choose a waterfront or headland perspective

Point Loma’s Cabrillo National Monument combines coastal scenery with historical interpretation. The bayside waterfront provides a different, more urban experience. Barrio Logan and Chicano Park add an important community and cultural perspective, with public art connected to the neighborhood’s history.

MAKE IT YOUR JOURNEY

Plan your visit

For a first visit, divide the city into geographic days instead of repeatedly crossing it. Check individual museum tickets, park notices and the access route for any coastal walk. Tide-pool visits depend on tides and conditions. Anza-Borrego is an inland desert excursion with different weather and travel needs; it should not be treated as another beach stop.
