Enter the parish quietly and observe where photography or movement is restricted. Pilgrims’ private acts of devotion are not a performance.

Parish church and pilgrimage traditions
The parish and its devotion to Saint Francis reveal why Real de Catorce is much more than a picturesque former mining town.

The place and its story
Why it deserves time
The central parish church is a focus of religious life, with devotion to San Francisco de Asís drawing pilgrims to Real de Catorce. Around the October feast period, the character and pace of the town can change considerably. A visitor may come for architecture, but the significance of the place lies equally in the journeys people make to worship here. The surrounding region also holds deep importance for Wixárika communities; these traditions should not be collapsed into a single tourist story.

Slow down and notice
Three things to look for
Look at the building in relation to its square and neighbouring streets. The public space helps explain how the town gathers.
Ask permission before photographing individuals, offerings or ceremonies. A respectful conversation is more valuable than assuming access.
Make a thoughtful visit
Plan your visit
Allow an hour or more for the parish area, but leave the pace flexible. Confirm access around services and pilgrimage events. Busy religious periods can affect accommodation, parking and the tunnel approach, so book transport and lodging ahead. Dress respectfully and avoid guiding a loud group through worship. If the interior is unavailable, the square and exterior still provide a worthwhile introduction.
Time allowances are ATA planning suggestions, not opening hours. Confirm admission, availability and access directly before travelling.
