Move around sculptures where the route permits, observing how a figure changes from different angles. Do not touch unless a display explicitly allows it.

Museo Leonora Carrington
Surreal creatures and imaginative forms inhabit a former prison setting at San Luis Potosí’s arts centre.

The place and its story
Why it deserves time
The Museo Leonora Carrington in San Luis Potosí is located within the Centro de las Artes. Sculpture and other works introduce the artist’s imaginative world in an architectural setting quite unlike a conventional neutral gallery. The contrast between the former penitentiary and Carrington’s open-ended imagery is part of the encounter. Be sure you are planning for the San Luis Potosí museum: there is also a Carrington museum in Xilitla, which is a different destination.

Slow down and notice
Three things to look for
Give titles and labels time, but leave space for your own response. Surreal imagery need not be reduced to one correct explanation.
Look at the courtyards and old walls as well as the artworks. They are part of the museum’s distinctive setting.
Make a thoughtful visit
Plan your visit
Allow around ninety minutes, with more time if also exploring the arts centre. Confirm the current exhibition, ticket arrangements and photography rules. Choose the San Luis Potosí location when using maps or booking transport. Ask about step-free routes and accessible facilities if needed; do not assume the former prison’s layout is equally easy throughout.
Time allowances are ATA planning suggestions, not opening hours. Confirm admission, availability and access directly before travelling.
