La Fortuna & Arenal

A volcano on the horizon, forest trails and time in warm water.

Arenal gives the landscape its unmistakable shape, but a stay here is about more than getting a clear photograph of the cone. Forest walks, a waterfall outing and a hot-springs afternoon make very different kinds of days.

Plan the stay around the difference between the national park and the independently operated attractions around town. A forest morning, the waterfall and a thermal-pool visit involve different journeys and levels of exertion. Choose one main activity for each part of the day, then allow time for a meal and the return to your accommodation. The forest remains worth exploring when cloud covers the volcano, so avoid making every outing depend on a clear summit view.

Look a little closer

The story behind the place.

Treat La Fortuna as a base and choose your excursions. The national park, privately operated trails, hanging bridges and thermal properties have separate entrances and bookings. Cloud can conceal the volcano, so make the journey worthwhile even without the view.

Arenal Volcano National Park

Look at the volcanic landscape and the forest together. The cone gives the area its shape, while the authorised trails offer a closer encounter with the vegetation and the ground beneath it. Choose a route that suits your group and the conditions, with time to pause at permitted viewpoints. A national-park visit is distinct from the private trails and attractions marketed around Arenal.

Plan your visitStay on permitted routes. The summit is not an ordinary visitor hike, and access can change.

La Fortuna Waterfall

Give the descent, the waterfall setting and the return climb their own visiting period. The view at the bottom is only one part of the outing; the substantial stairs matter just as much when judging suitability. Check the operator’s current arrangements before departure and plan a quieter activity afterwards if the climb is likely to be demanding.

Plan your visitAsk the operator about current access and conditions. Consider the return climb before buying a ticket.

Forest trails & thermal relaxation

Choose the kind of slower visit you want. A guided forest walk focuses attention on the habitat and small details, while a thermal property offers a different experience built around its pools and facilities. These are separately operated activities with different prices and inclusions. Ask about the actual walking, transport, changing facilities and restrictions instead of assuming every package provides the same day.

Plan your visitCompare the actual inclusions, transport and age or mobility restrictions. A park ticket does not include private attractions.

A suggested outline

Take time to explore.

  1. Give the national park or a guided forest walk your first full morning.
  2. Choose the waterfall on a separate outing if the stairs suit your group.
  3. Leave an afternoon for thermal pools or a rest at your lodge.

Make the visit work for you

Plan a comfortable outing.

Allow time

3 nights. This is our suggested planning allowance, not a published opening time.

Eat & drink

Town restaurants and small sodas offer a range of Costa Rican dishes. If staying outside town, compare restaurant and transfer options before committing to every meal at the lodge.

Families, groups & accessible visits

Ask the venue about shade, toilets, steps and suitable routes before travel. For an organised group, confirm arrival slots, guide languages and coach access. We have not independently audited accessibility.

Season & conditions

Rain occurs throughout the year in this region. Volcano visibility is unpredictable, and storms can change trail or waterfall conditions.

Where to stay.

Two base suggestions.
Check location and transfers.

Fewer than 15 rooms? Contact the hotel directly. These published contacts are suggestions, not personal inspections, availability promises or confirmation of group capacity. Check operating arrangements before paying.

Large groups, 15 rooms or more

Ask ATA for low group hotel rates.

We use existing hotel agreements where available and negotiate for your group when needed, backed by over 35 years of group travel experience.

We respond within 48 hours, allowing for time zones worldwide. “Instant” rates do not always give you the lowest rates.

Getting here & around

Arrive with a plan.

Arrive by road or an arranged shuttle, checking your actual hotel location. Arenal and Monteverde are not a quick hop across the map, allow a substantial transfer and confirm road or lake-transfer arrangements.
