MUST-SEE

Guilin & Yangshuo

Limestone peaks, river bends and a day that follows the water.

This is the China of karst peaks and river reflections, but choose your base carefully. Guilin is the transport gateway, while Yangshuo and the surrounding villages offer a different pace. Give the countryside time beyond the most photographed viewpoint.

Think of the region as several linked places rather than one continuous attraction. A river journey, a countryside walk and an old-town visit each need their own time and transfers. Decide how much of your stay belongs in Guilin and how much near Yangshuo before choosing hotels. In the countryside, a shorter route with time to stop often gives a stronger sense of the landscape than a long circuit viewed mostly from a vehicle.

The Li River

The river changes as the peaks overlap, the banks open out and the light moves across the water. Choose the form of outing that gives you time to enjoy that changing view. A cruise is a different commitment from a short local boat trip or a riverside walk; check the actual start, finish and return transport before you book.

Plan your visit Routes, boarding points and services vary, use an authorised operator and check water and weather conditions.

The Yulong River countryside

Give the smaller river landscape a visiting period of its own. Fields, paths and village edges reward a slower pace than the main river journey, with room to stop and look. Choose walking or an authorised water activity for the actual conditions, and make sure your route ends somewhere with a reliable way back to your accommodation.

Plan your visit Rafting has operator rules and weather limits, confirm suitability, age restrictions and transport arrangements.

Xingping

Combine a walk in the old-town area with time to appreciate the surrounding river landscape. Keep the two parts manageable rather than adding every viewpoint to a transfer day. A railway station and the place you want to explore are separate points in the journey; account for the local transfer and the return before committing to onward travel.

Plan your visit Plan a separate transfer between Xingping and your hotel, and avoid a rushed train-day excursion.

Guilin’s city sights

A city day can be a useful contrast to the more dispersed countryside. Choose one or two parks or landscape sights, checking their current visitor arrangements, and leave room for a meal and a walk nearby. This gives Guilin a place in the itinerary beyond its practical role as the arrival and departure gateway.

Plan your visit Check current park information and transfers with your hotel or the official visitor service.

An unhurried introduction

A day to make your own.

  1. Begin with a gentle countryside walk near your chosen base.
  2. Choose a pre-arranged river activity that suits conditions and your group.
  3. Enjoy a relaxed meal, leaving a longer Guilin or Xingping excursion for a separate day.

A suggested outline, adjust it to opening days, bookings and your pace.

Enjoy the place, not just the sights

Pause. Taste. Stay a little.

Choose a riverside meal and ask about local Guangxi dishes. A village walk or a suitably planned bicycle outing can be as memorable as the main river excursion.

How long to stay

Allow three or four nights, with most countryside time based around Yangshuo if that is your priority.
