Stone Buddhas, painted dragons and a temple clinging to a cliff.
Datong is a rewarding detour for visitors who want monumental art with a different setting from the main first-visit circuit. The Yungang caves are the great draw, while the old-city sights and a separate Hanging Temple excursion add variety.
Build the stay around two different scales: the carved art outside the city and the temple courtyards and streets within it. Yungang deserves a substantial visiting period, with time to look at details rather than simply pass the cave entrances. Keep the Hanging Temple as a separately arranged excursion. Back in town, a shorter walk linking a temple and the dragon screen gives a quieter conclusion to a day of travel and monumental sights.
Look first at the overall composition of a cave, then at the individual figures, gestures and carved surfaces. Changes of scale are part of the experience: small details can be as absorbing as the largest statues. Give the interpretation time, and let conservation restrictions shape the actual route rather than expecting every interior to be accessible.

The Hanging Temple
Plan this as an excursion with its own transport and a realistic margin for entry arrangements. The dramatic exterior and the experience of moving through the structures are different parts of the visit. Discuss stairs, confined passages and comfort with heights before booking; some visitors may prefer to appreciate the setting without attempting every accessible section.
Plan your visit Confirm current access, visitor limits and suitability for narrow passages, stairs and heights.
Pause between the buildings as well as inside them. Courtyards give the architecture its setting and help visitors understand the relationship between the different spaces. A focused visit to one temple complex adds more to the stay than a quick circuit of several entrances, particularly when paired with a relaxed walk through the city.

Nine-Dragon Screen & city streets
Begin by studying the screen’s colours and raised details, then let the surrounding streets provide a change of pace. A local guide can distinguish surviving fabric from later rebuilding and restoration. That distinction makes the walk more interesting without requiring every street to present an untouched picture of the past.
Plan your visit Ask for an up-to-date local route and confirm any interior visits before setting out.
Spend a morning exploring a manageable part of the old-city area.
Choose Huayan Temple and the Nine-Dragon Screen, with time for lunch.
Save Yungang and the Hanging Temple for separate outings if your schedule allows.

Enjoy the place, not just the sights
Pause. Taste. Stay a little.
Look for Shanxi noodles and take time over a local meal. The city is a useful base, but the best days need realistic transfer planning rather than simply choosing the nearest hotel to a railway station.
