Imperial courtyards, hutong lanes and a day at the Great Wall.
Begin with the sweep of palace roofs, then look for a smaller Beijing in its lanes, parks and neighbourhood meals. This is a city to explore in chapters. Keep the Great Wall as a separate day and give its scale the time it deserves.
Give the monumental sights and the smaller neighbourhoods different parts of the stay. A palace visit rewards sustained attention to the sequence of courts and buildings; the parks and hutong lanes offer a gentler pace afterwards. The Great Wall belongs on a separate day, with travel, walking conditions and the return to your hotel planned together. This approach leaves room for the Beijing between the landmarks: a meal, a quiet lane and time to sit in a park.
Follow the progression from one courtyard to the next and notice how the scale changes as you move through the palace. Looking closely at a few painted beams, rooflines and interior displays is more rewarding than racing toward every open building. Leave room in the visit for orientation and a rest, especially when the courts are crowded.
Plan your visit Reserve through the Palace Museum’s official visitor service and follow its current passport and entry instructions.
The experience is as much about the wall meeting the mountain as it is about reaching another tower. Decide in advance what kind of walk suits your group, including the steps on the return. Mechanical transport can shorten part of the approach, but it does not make the wall itself a level or effortless outing.
Plan your visit A separate excursion from central Beijing, check official tickets, access and weather before setting out.

Temple of Heaven
Balance time around the ceremonial buildings with an unhurried walk through an accessible part of the park. The contrast helps separate the architecture’s formal purpose from the everyday life of the surrounding public space. Choose your ticket around the areas you actually want to enter, rather than assuming a park admission includes every building.
Plan your visit Check which areas your ticket includes and respect any temporary access restrictions.

Jingshan & the hutongs
Use the hilltop outlook to understand the palace’s setting, then make a separate, manageable walk through one hutong area. They offer different experiences: a broad city view and the close scale of residential lanes. Avoid turning the neighbourhood into a route of doorways to photograph; homes and small businesses remain working parts of the city.
Plan your visit Use the tourism service for current routes and park information. Jingshan involves an uphill walk.
Keep a reserved Palace Museum visit as the main event, rather than crowding the morning with other bookings.
Follow with Jingshan Park if conditions suit, then enjoy a relaxed meal.
Explore a hutong neighbourhood, saving the Great Wall for a separate day.
A suggested outline, adjust it to opening days, bookings and your pace.
Enjoy the place, not just the sights
Pause. Taste. Stay a little.
Try roast duck with time for a proper meal, then explore a hutong area on foot. Remember that these lanes are also residential streets, ask before photographing people or entering courtyards.
