Lockenhaus

A castle above the Güns, wooded hills and a surprising colony of bats: Lockenhaus rewards a visit that goes beyond its medieval walls.

Lockenhaus is a place to connect a castle visit with the quieter character of the village and surrounding woods. Begin with the visiting arrangements at Burg Lockenhaus, choosing the guided experience or exhibition that interests you. Historic rooms and courtyards are more rewarding when you give their stories time, rather than only looking for a viewpoint. Afterwards, leave room for the main square, church surroundings and a local meal. A woodland walk can add another dimension, provided you choose a suitable marked route and check local guidance. The strongest visit keeps these elements close enough to enjoy properly: one main cultural stop, a little fresh air and time to notice the village beyond the castle approach.

Woodland around the castle

Combine the castle with a walk in the surrounding nature park landscape. The village’s forest experience trail offers another way to look at the woods.

A different perspective

Meet the castle’s bats

Lockenhaus is home to an important Geoffroy’s bat maternity colony. The castle’s bat experience reveals a remarkable natural story within the old walls; check which displays and activities are available.

Practical planning

Make the visit work for you.

Getting here & the final connection

Check regional buses to Lockenhaus and the approach from the village to the castle. For a car visit, follow the operator’s parking directions, not an unmarked forest track.

Families, walking & accessibility

Castle passages, courtyards and a woodland path have different surfaces. Confirm the tour route for anyone avoiding steps; ask about child-friendly bat interpretation without disturbing wildlife.

Season & reservations

Check castle tours, exhibitions and the bat experience separately. Wildlife observation depends on the season and the operator’s current programme.

Food & a slower pause

Arrange a village meal or ask whether castle catering is available to ordinary visitors on your date.

Speak to the hotel directly

Choose a suitable place to stay.

Ask before you reserve

Contact the property for room availability, the full price, breakfast, cancellation terms and any access requirements. Ask separately whether dinner is available, restaurant operation may differ from hotel operation.

These are researched listings, not personal guest reviews. Individual reservations remain with the hotel or its chosen booking provider.
