Dead Horse Point State Park, Utah

Location

Dead Horse Point State Park is located near Moab. From Moab, proceed north on US191. Turn west onto Utah State Road 313. The park is about eighteen miles along this road. According to an unofficial source of information the road is paved all the way to the overlook in the park but access to the plateau below the overlook is via an unpaved road and requires a four wheel drive vehicle.

Description

From the overlook in the park there is a wonderful view of the Colorado River, two thousand feet below, running through an eroded canyon. At this point the river turns round a U-shaped bend, leaving an isolated peninsula of higher ground opposite the viewpoint.

This part of Utah gets extremely hot in summer. However, I have seen a statement on an unofficial source that due to the altitude it is considerably cooler at Dead Horse Point State Park than at Moab.

Some Ideas for Places to Stay

Moab would seem the obvious choice, but we haven't stayed in this town so I can't comment on it.
